FLUIDYNE® was formed as a Division of Dunham-Bush, an HVAC manufacturer that can trace its roots via the D. A. Dunham Manufacturing Company of Marshalltown Iowa, all the way back to 1903… the same year Harley-Davidson Motorcycles and Briggs and Stratton Engines were formed.

In 1960, the first known sale of an ‘Auxiliary Oil Cooler’ was a 4-tube copper unit sold to a Mr. Perry Hayden for his RV transmission. That first aftermarket oil cooler and all the oil coolers that Hayden Automotive sold for their first 15 years in business were produced by Dunham-Bush, the parent company of FLUIDYNE® High Performance.

A few of FLUIDYNE® Firsts include:

  • First ‘Aux’ Cooler
  • First Patented Inner-Fin Turbulator Design
  • First Copyrighted Split-Fin Design
  • First Shelby Engine Oil Cooler produced
  • First Shelby Transmission Oil Cooler produced

Configurations Available: FLUIDYNE® oil coolers and heat exchangers are available in several construction formats. Each format offers a particular advantage…

  • Round Tube and Fin Coolers
An early design known for its low oil-side pressure drop and multi-directional fin access for easy installations. The air fin is mechanically bonded and the tubes are TIG or MIG welded together, forming a cross-tube and header design. Flexibility is the significant advantage of this cooler design as it can be adapted to most applications by varying the length, height, fin density and tube diameters.

  • Bar-Plate Coolers
One of the first types of furnace-brazed all aluminum coolers developed, this technology uses machined bars and plates to form fluid and air channels in the heat exchanger that can be tailored to match your available space, fluid flow and air-side pressure drop. Although heavy by comparison to the other types of oil cooler designs, this type of cooler is so rugged that you can usually park whatever vehicle you are trying to cool… right on top of it without hurting it! FLUIDYNE® offers this style cooler in its ‘Full-Surface Oil Cooler’ used by many NASCAR teams.

  • Stacked Plate and Fin Coolers
This cooler design has a fixed length plate but allows for variable stack-heights to match performance to the available space. It is traditionally used in a ducted air application where high performance cooling is desired with good air flow but limited space available. FLUIDYNE® has tooled this style cooler with a 50mm plate width and offers the cooler in stack heights of 10 -plate, 15-plate, 20-plate and 25-plate options. An alternate ‘Top Mount’ design was recently introduced that provides a shorter air fin height and more fluid tubes than earlier models. These coolers are available in stack heights of 13, 19, 25 and 40 plates.

  • Oval Tube Coolers
Oval tubes stuffed with an oil-side turbulator and spaced through the use of a tubesheet or header. Louvered or Lanced-Offset air fin is then placed between the rows of tubes at desired lengths and heights to meet the available package size and performance spec. Oil tanks with an oil inlet and outlet port are installed along the length and width of the headers to form an oil cooler assembly. These coolers can be made to accommodate a single or double pass flow option, depending on allowable pressure drop specifications. This style is very rugged and can be expected to survive in very harsh conditions. FLUIDYNE® offers this style cooler in over 10 different sizes shown in detail in other parts of this web site.

  • Parallel Flow Flat-Tube Multi-Channel Coolers
Developed in the early 90’s, these oil cooler designs were developed to combine the flexibility of the Bar-Plate and Oval Tube coolers while reducing the mass and weight normally associated with those configurations. These coolers are very light and unusually compact considering the amount of heat rejection they are capable of. The FLUIDYNE design uses radiator air fin for these coolers which makes them an excellent choice for use around the radiator without concern about conflicting air-side pressure drops. The FLUIDYNE® design is only 19mm thick [.750”] measuring 25” x 17” and is used as an engine oil cooler which can be placed either in front of or behind the radiator.

  • Stainless Steel Stacked Plate Hx’s
FLUIDYNE® offers several varieties of Stainless Steel plate coolers for use in water-to-oil Hx’s. Some of our Hx designs incorporate an aluminum water tank encasing the SS oil cooler. Other designs incorporate the SS oil cooler into the side tank of our Radiator. This application is becoming increasingly popular with Street Rodders who desire engine oil cooling but have little or no available space for an air-to-oil cooler.

New Product Development

As new fluids and new materials and new manufacturing concepts are developed, new innovations in oil cooling are being demonstrated each year.

FLUIDYNE® is fortunate to be involved in several funded development programs where new cooling technologies are being utilized that are certain to have excellent application utility in Motorsports.

As in the past, you can count on FLUIDYNE® to deliver tomorrow's cooling technologies with the same attention to quality, durability and performance that we have demonstrated since we built our first auxiliary oil cooler for Hayden Automotive, several decades ago.
